Sterling starts strong, falls to Kansas Wesleyan 7-5

Sterling College baseball took on Kansas Wesleyan at home on Tuesday, April 15. The Warriors got off to a strong start but ran out of steam in the final innings and lost 7-5.

The Coyotes were the first to score in the top of the second inning with a single up the middle from Eric Romero to bring in Chase Aurnd.

Sterling quickly answered back with a single to center field from Ezavian Campos to advance Austin Santiago home.

Kansas Wesleyan got the edge on the Warriors in the top of the third with a single to right field from Carter Allen to advance Alex Garcia home and give KWU the 2-1 lead.

The Warriors took their first lead in the bottom of the third as Andrew Dutro worked his way around the base path and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Nehemiah House singled through the right side to bring home Jackson Parmenter and give Sterling the 3-2 lead.

Emmanuel Huerta Cardenas extended the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, to put Sterling up 5-2.

However, a big five-run inning from the Coyotes in the top of the seventh put Kansas Wesleyan back on top and the Warriors were unable to get anything going offensively in the final innings of play.

Trenton Canaan started things off for the Warriors from the mound. He faced 31 pitchers through six innings, surrendering nine hits which resulted in six runs while walking three batters and striking out two.

Cooper Lovelace came in relief for one inning, he gave up two hits which resulted in one run. Eric Villa finished things out for Sterling in the remaining two innings. He surrendered two hits while keeping the Coyotes scoreless.

Sterling will be back in action on Thursday, April 17 as they travel to Leavenworth, Kan. to take on Saint Mary University.
