Sterling College baseball gets first conference win against Southwestern

Sterling College baseball got their first conference win on Tuesday, March 11 against Southwestern College. The Warriors had a breakout game, ending the scheduled nine-inning game in seven innings with a commanding 20-3 victory.

The Moundbuilders were first to score, with a single through the left field to allow in one score.

However, the Warriors answered back in the bottom of the second as Nate Hefline was walked with the bases loaded that scored Austin Santiago. Luis Morales singled down the left field line to advance curtesy runner Donovan Williams and Nehemiah House. Andrew Dutro put the icing on the cake with a three-run homerun, giving Sterling the 6-1 lead.

Southwestern tried to get some traction in the top of the fourth inning with a single from Luca Dincola to bring in Skyler Espinoza. Dincola rounded the bases and capitalized on a wild pitch to get the last score the Moundbuilders would see.

From there on out, it was all Warriors. Sterling answered back with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two in the bottom of the fifth, including a two-run homerun from Emmanuel Huerta Cardenas.

Morales put the cherry on top with a single through the left side in the bottom of the sixth to bring home Jason Smith and give Sterling the 20-3 win.

Morales led the Warriors in RBIs with five followed by Huerta Cardenas and Dutro with four each. Huerta Cardenas also led Sterling in runs with four.

Trenton Canaan took the mound for the Warriors, pitching six innings and facing 29 batters, throwing 62 strikes on 101 pitches. He surrendered eight hits which resulted in three runs, while only walking two batters.

The Warriors next match up will be against Tabor College at home on Friday, March 14.
