Baseball Falls in Series Opener to (RV) KWU

Sterling, Kan. – Warrior baseball fell on Tuesday afternoon to (RV) Kansas Wesleyan University. The Warriors started with a great pitching performance by Andrew Mason, but fell in the late innings as the Coyote bats got hot. The game was much more competitive than the final score of 10-1.

Mason came out firing striking out two batters in the first inning. It took three innings before either team was able to score a run when KWU got 2 runs in the top of the third. They added two more runs in the sixth making the score 4-0 Coyotes. Sterling answered with their lone run in the sixth. Dustin Chartrand led off with a bunt single and ended up at second on a throwing error. Andrew Dutro followed it up with a double into the left field corner, scoring Chartrand. The bats continued to come alive for KWU in the final three innings as they score one in the seventh, four in the eighth, and one more in the ninth, making the final score 10-1.

Mason took the loss after a fine start. He went six innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out five batters. Tyler Duffey took over in the seventh and pitched four outs giving up five runs. Kimo Kawelo finished the game, pitching an inning and two-thirds and gave up one run on two hits. Dutro, Austin Santiago, and Tyler Gates combined for six of Sterling's eight hits, with Dutro knocking in the lone Warrior run.

Sterling is now 14-19 this season and 8-14 in conference play. They are about to enter a portion of the season where series wins will directly impact their standing in the KCAC race for the final spots in the KCAC tournament. They have faced several of the KCAC top teams already this season, many receiving votes from the national committee, and in many of those series, Sterling has snagged at least one win, putting them in a good place to make a late season push for the tournament.
