Baseball Splits at Wiley

 

Marshal, Texas – Sterling baseball came away with a 1-1 weekend against Wiley College over the weekend. What was originally supposed to be a 3 game series got shortened because of rain.

Game 1

David Lira got the start and pitched well for 4 innings giving up 4 runs and keeping Sterling in the game. Sterling got the offense started with a 2-run blast to center field off the bat of Nicholas Keller. Sterling was up 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but gave up 7 runs over the next two innings and ended up with a 9-6 loss.

Keller led Sterling with 4 RBIs going 2 for 3 at the plate, his other hit was a 2-run double. Dustin Chartrand also hit a home run in the fifth, the second longball for each of these hitters. Tyler Gates was 3 for 3 with a run scored. Lira got the start but was a no decision and Tyler Duffey took the loss. Lira pitched four innings and gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, and Duffey pitched two innings and gave up 5 runs, just 1 earned. Errors hurt Sterling in the late innings.

Game 2

Sterling came firing right back in game 2 with a come from behind 6-3 win. Down 2 runs early, Sterling slowly worked their way back into the game scoring in the 3rd, 5th, ,6th and 7th innings. Sterling closed the weather shortened series out with a 6-3 over Wiley College.

Luis Morales had the hot bat going 3 for 4, scoring a run and knocking one in as well. Andrew Dutro also had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 scoring twice and hitting one runner in. Five different Warriors had RBIs in the game. Andrew Mason and Cipriano Rivera split time on the mound. Mason pitched an inning and two-thirds and gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, and Rivera pitched five and a third innings giving up just 1 run while striking out 7, earning the win.

The Warriors are now 3-1 this season. They return home Tuesday afternoon to take on Central Christian College at 2 pm. The game will be broadcast on the Sterling College Sports Network and live stats can be found on the SCWarriors website.
