Warrior’s Offense Explodes in Opening Weekend Sweep

Sterling, Kan. – The Warrior baseball team sure had their bats ready to go as they scored 39 runs in two games against the Randall University Saints. The series was originally scheduled for four games, but with weather rolling through overnight, the final two games were canceled. Sterling won both of their opening games by final scores of 17-0 and 22-10.

Game 1

The first game of the double header was won in all facets by the Warriors. David Lira, returning to the lineup after injuries kept him off the field last year, threw five inning of nearly flawless baseball. He faced 17 batters and struck out 14 of them. The others were a first inning walk, a fourth inning fly out, and a fifth inning single, and no runs came across to score. At one point, Lira struck out 10 batters in a row, and ultimately earned the win. Offensively, the Warriors were not left lacking either. Five Warriors had multi-hit performances, led by Andrew Mason. Mason was 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs and a homerun. Every player from the starting lineup scored at least one time. Homeruns in the game came from Mason and Nick Keller.

Game 2

Game two was all about hitting. The Randall University bats woke up and were scoring as much as Sterling for the first four innings. Sterling poured on 22 runs in their efficient at-bats. Whether it was timely hitting or patient hitting, waiting for strikes, it seemed like Sterling could do no wrong en route to their 22-10 game two win.

Highlighting the way was Dustin Chartrand who finished the game hitting for the cycle, before putting in two innings of bullpen work to close out the game. Chartrand gave up one hit and struck out three in his two innings of work. Chartrand was 4 for 5 offensively with 5 RBIs. Luis Morales was 3 for 6, also with 5 RBIs. Newcomer Nate Heffline was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs, 4 runs scored and 2 walks. The big hitter from game one, Andrew Mason was 0 for 1, but took 4 walks and scored twice.

Homeruns in the game came from Morales, Chartrand, Heffline, and Joseph Almanza.

The Warriors play at Wiley next weekend in Texas for a quick two-game set before returning home on the 13^th to play Central Christian College for a single nine-inning game.
