Sterling, Kan. – SC Volleyball got a quick 3-0 match win in over Mission University before going toe-to-toe with KCAC foe Kansas Wesleyan University later in the evening. The Lady Warriors handled the Patriots easily, winning 25-17, 25-15, 25-14. The KWU match did not go as well for the Warriors as they lost 3-0 in very competitive sets. Sterling lost 15-25, 20-25, 21-25. The first match, although a ten point loss, never felt like the game was out of hand. Sterling smashed balls just like the Coyotes. The second and third sets were much closer in score and were just as competitive. They proved to themselves that they belong near the upper tier of the KCAC. In the third set, Sterling was in control until late in the match. They held a 15-11 lead at one point, and the game was tied at 18-18. KWU went on one more run than the Warriors and that was the difference in the third set.
In the Mission match, Aliya McClanahan and Kodie Herd led the way offensively with 9 kills each. Both McClanahan and Herd hit over .470 in the match. McClanahan took care of business on defense as well racking up 5 more blocks, following up her 13-block performance last week. Seniors, Ashlyn Fast and Morgan Pellegrino added a pair of blocks each as well. The defensive front for the Warriors this season has been incredible to watch this season. Nyah Isom and Makenna Linden each had 8 digs in the match as well.
Against KWU, the first KCAC match of the season, Sterling held their own, thanks to the contributions of all six spots on the court. The front line continued to do what they do. McClanahan and Chloe Schmidt led the attack. McClanahan this time reached double-digit kills with 10 and Schmidt had 8 kills while hitting .368. Aubrey Young led the Warriors in digs and assists as she found herself in the right place at the right time. One of the most impressive parts of the night was how hard balls were being hit from both sides of the net, and how many balls were dug and playable on both sides of the net. It really added to the intensity of the evening. Unfortunately, the Warriors took the loss in a well-played match.
Sterling heads to York University on Wednesday, September 25th, at 7 pm. They have a full week recovery in between before traveling to Avila just two days later. The Warriors are 9-5 this season and 0-1 early in the KCAC season.
