Salina, Kan. – For the first time this season the SC Warrior volleyball team faced struggle on the court. They played a three match tournament on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan against fierce competition.
The first match of the weekend was a rematch against Stephens College who they had just beaten in straight sets the weekend prior. SC came out of the gate and won a tough first set 25-22 before dropping the subsequent sets 23-25,15-25,22-25 to lose the match in four sets. Aliya McClanahan and Kodie Herd were each credited with 14 kills. Makenna Linden led the back row once again from the Libero position and Aubrey Young served as setter in the 5-1 offense.
Game two did not get any easier as the Lady Warriors took on Xavier (LA). Xavier brought a 1-9 record into the match, but almost all of their nonconference schedule to date was against top 25 or RV teams. SC held tight for the first set, dropped off in the second, and remained competitive in the third set, but it just wasn't enough. Sterling lost 3-0 by scores of 22-25,15-25,18-25. Four Warriors had double figure kills, being led by Herd with 18, McClanahan and Chloe Schmidt with 14, and Morgan Pellegrino with 12.
To close out the weekend the Lady Warriors faced William Penn. It was another four set loss for the Warriors. They dropped set 1 22-25, before fighting back to come from behind and win set 2 by the same 25-22 score. Their level of play dropped off slightly in sets 3 and 4 as they lost 17-25, and 20-25, respectively. Herd once again led the Lady Warriors in kills with 15, McClanahan had 10.
After winning the first seven matches of the season SC has now lost four in a row. They head to Mid America Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 11, for their second to last match before the conference season begins.
