Tennis Starts Conference Season with Dominant Wins

Leavenworth, Kan. – Both men's and women's tennis started the conference season on Saturday taking on the University of Saint Mary Spires. Both teams opened conference play leaving no doubt about the outcome of the matches. The Sterling women started the day with a 5-2 win, and the men followed it up with a 6-1 win over the Spires.

Women

The Lady Warriors struggled at the start and couldn't put much together and lost the doubles point. But as doubles got done, Sterling refocused before singles and took five of the six singles matches. Number 3, 5 and 6 singles left no doubt as they won in consecutive sets. Numbers 1, 2 and 4 went to points to determine their winners. Sterling won each of those matches except for number 2 singles. Natalia Antkowiak was in control in both doubles and singles as her opponents scored zero points on her in a total of three sets.

Men

The men played one point better than the women picking up a 6-1 win over the Spires. The men picked up the doubles point with wins in the number 2 and number 3 doubles. In singles, number won singles went to points to earn the win, while numbers 3 thru 6 won fairly easily giving up just nine points in the eight sets that were played. Esteban Rocha, Sterling's typical number 4 singles player, did not play in the match moving David Garces up to number 4, Zack Hash up to number 5, and binging in Abhyudit Nagar up to play number 6 singles.

Both tennis teams turn right around and play a tough Kansas Wesleyan University team on the road on Monday afternoon. Both Sterling teams are now 1-0 in the conference and the women's team heads into Monday's match with a six game winning streak having not lost a spring match to date.
