The Sterling College Lady Warriors claimed a decisive 77-60 victory against the Avila University Eagles on senior day, Saturday, Feb. 15. The win further bolsters the Warriors' season record to 13-7 in conference and 17-9 overall.
From the onset, the Warriors took control of the court. The first period ended with Sterling ahead 24-18, after a series of impressive plays, including key three-pointers and crucial free throws by Kali Briar. The momentum didn't wane as Sterling extended their lead to 12 points by halftime, with the score at 45-33. Key contributors were Alissa Heskamp and Korynn Clason, who combined for early scoring surges that kept the Eagles at bay.
The third period saw Sterling further their lead, pushing the margin to 18 points. The Warriors maintained strong defensive and offensive runs, highlighted by strategic plays from Karlee Jacobs and Evie Gill, ending the quarter at 59-47. The final quarter was no different, as Sterling controlled the game, ending with a solid 77-60 win over Avila.
Alissa Heskamp led the scoring for Sterling, with an impressive 14 points and seven rebounds. She was well supported by Korynn Clason and Kali Briar, who scored 12 points each.
The defense was equally strong, with Clason and McKenna Vogl recording three steals, Bailey Young contributing seven rebounds and Kayla Morris protecting the rim with a blocked shot.
Looking ahead, the Lady Warriors will be back in the Gleason facing McPherson College (0-19, 0-25) on Wednesday, Feb. 19. With their current form, the team is poised for more successes in the season, aiming to build on their solid record and continue their pursuit of excellence in the court.
