Lady Warriors Lose Heartbreaker to Saint Mary

Leavenworth, Kan. – The Lady Warriors went toe-to-toe with the top dogs in the KCAC, the University of Saint Mary Spires, and almost came away with an upset victory. They made a big fourth quarter comeback and wound up with a 75-74 loss.

Sterling took a punch in the gut from the Spires right out of the gate and trailed 8-2 early on. An 11-4 run to close out the first quarter gave Sterling the early 19-18 lead. After going neck and neck for the first eight minutes of the second quarter, Saint Mary punched the gas and closed the quarter on a 9-2 run, giving them a seven point halftime lead.

Not discouraged, the Lady Warriors continued to play solid basketball and each team scored 15 points in the quarter. Sterling trailed 55-48 heading in to the final quarter of play. It took most of the quarter, but Sterling battled back into the game in the final two minutes. Down six, Sterling went on an 8-1 run to take a 74-73 lead with under thirty seconds left in regulation. Saint Mary's Paige Pendley made an acrobatic layup attempt the Spires back up one. Sterling got one good look down the stretch but were not able to retake the lead and Sterling lost a hard-fought game to the Spires, 75-74.

Korynn Clason continues to lead the offense for Sterling. She had 19 points and 7 rebounds in the loss. Bailey Young added 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Kali Briar added 14 points.

Sterling returns to the Gleason Center on Saturday evening at 5 pm to take on the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. The Lady Builders are still looking for their first win under their new Head Coach.
