Late Run by Valor Costs Warriors in Conference Battle

Sterling, Kan. – The Lady Warriors began the 2024 portion of the season by hosting the Evangel Valor for the first time in KCAC competition. The Valor put together a couple of key runs in the game, their final one putting the game away in the fourth quarter. Sterling lost to Evangel 74-56.

Evangel came out with a 17-7 start against Sterling when a county-wide power outage paused the game for nearly 40 minutes. Sterling trailed by 11 at the end of the first quarter, and by as many as 15 later on in the first half. Sterling worked the game back to manageable by the time the first half came to a close, but still trailed 41-32.

Sterling looked poised to make a comeback late in the third quarter. Sterling cut the lead to just 3 points with just under two minutes to play in the frame. After that, however, it took Sterling 8 minutes to get their next field goal and hit just one free throw in the stretch. Evangel took full advantage and scored 19 in the same stretch, putting the game out of reach.

Korynn Clason led the Warriors once again with 20 points. Bailey Young earned the first double-double of her freshman year setting career highs with 10 points and 10 rebounds. With the loss, Sterling falls to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the KCAC. Sterling is in a mix of 5 teams fighting for the 4th spot in the KCAC standings.

Sterling is on the road this weekend against Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla. OKWU has struggled to find their way this season with a 2-8 record and just one win in conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
