
Lady Warriors split with Ottawa in doubleheader at home
Sterling College softball faced a tough Ottawa University team in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8. The Lady Warriors lost the first game 6-3 and won the second 2-0.
Game 1
Sterling struggled with errors in the opening game against Ottawa with three on the day which ultimately led to the 6-3 loss.
Ottawa struck first in the top of the first inning when Emma Melvin reached first on e throwing error by Bryley Westfahl at short stop which allowed Macy Roever to get home.
The Lady Warriors answered back with a single to right center from Kelly Hirlas which brought home Westfahl for the score and tie the game at one.
The Braves extended their lead in the top of the third inning with a single up the middle to bring Roever home again and a single from Davanie Medina to bring Addison Spencer home for the run to give Ottawa the 3-1 lead.
Sterling was able to tie it back up in the bottom of the fifth inning when a single from Hirlas brought home Westfahl and Mya Dunn for the score.
However, the Lady Warriors couldn't get anything else going offensively and the Braves were able to add two more runs in the top of the sixth and one more run in the top of the seventh to win game one 6-3.
MacKenzie Viehland started off from the circle for Sterling. She pitched five and one-third innings surrendering nine hits which resulted in five runs, walking four batters and striking out one.
Maria Casillas came in as relief for the Lady Warriors, finishing the one and two-third innings. Casillas surrendered two hits which resulted in one run.
Hirlas led Sterling in RBIs with three while Westfahl led the Lady Warriors in stolen bases and runs with two each.
Game 2
The Lady Warriors tightened things up defensively in the second game of the doubleheader, with no errors and no runs allowed.
Hirlas continued to be a menace in the box with another RBI in game one. This one coming in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Mariah Cunningham.
Sterling scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center field from Aiyana Campos to bring home Hirlas for the run and a 2-0 lead.
Allie Olivarria led the Lady Warriors from the center circle, pitching the full seven-inning shutout. The hurler faced 24 batters, giving up four hits which resulted in zero runs, walking one batter and striking out one.
Hirlas and Campos led Sterling in RBIs with one each while Hirlas and Cunningham led the Lady Warriors in runs with one each.
