Lady Warriors sweep Southwestern

Sterling College softball swept Southwestern in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 in Winfield, Kan.

Game 1

In game one, Sterling came out swinging with six runs throughout the first three innings to propel the Lady Warriors to a 10-5 win.

Desiree Perales got things started for Sterling with a single to bring home Mallory Seidel in the top of the first inning.

Southwestern answered back quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Warriors came back with three runs in the top of the second inning starting with a single from Maria Casillas to bring home Pheobi Waller. Sam Graham followed up with a fly ball out to left field to bring in Madilynn Green for the run and Cunningham ended the inning by capitalizing on an error by the short stop to extend Sterling's lead to 4-2.

Sterling continued to roll in the top of the third inning with a double from Green to bring Aiyana Campos and Perales home.

In the top of the sixth inning, Mariah Cunningham singled to bring home Casillas. Seidel returned the favor with a triple to bring Cunningham home, Kelly Hirlas singled to bring in Seidel for the score and Perales doubled to bring home Hirlas to give the Lady Warriors the 10-2 advantage.

The Moundbuilders tried to get some momentum with a score in the bottom of the sixth and were able to score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but ran out of steam as Sterling took the 10-5 victory.

McKenzie Viehland started things off from the circle for the Lady Warriors. She pitched six and one third innings surrendering three hits which resulted in two runs and striking out five batters. Madison Hedgecock came in as the relief pitcher, she finished out the last two outs of the seventh inning, allowing three hits which resulted in three runs, walking one batter and striking out another.

Game 2

The Lady Warriors continued to roll in game two, getting the 15-1 victory in five innings.

The Moundbuilders were the first to score with a triple from Tiara Henry in the bottom of the first inning but the rest of the game was all Sterling.

A single from Seidel brought home Green to get things started for the Lady Warriors in the top of the second followed by a single from Campos to bring Seidel in for the run. Graham singled to bring home Campos, Bryley Westfahl singled to bring home Waller, Cunningham tripled to send Graham and Westfahl home for the score.

Hirlas kept things going with a grounded out to second base to bring home Cunningham, Siedel singled again to bring home Perales, Campos doubled sending Seidel and Green in for the score and Graham finished out the inning with a single to bring home Campos to give the Lady Warriors a 11-1 lead at the end of the second inning.

Sterling extended their lead in the top of the fourth with a single from Mya' Dunn to advance Waller home and a double from Kassedy Midgley to bring home Dunn and Aubrie Martinez for the score.

Waller closed things out with one more score in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Martinez and give Sterling the 15-1 victory.

Allie Olivarria led the Lady Warrior's from the circle, pitching four and one third innings. She faced 18 batters, surrendering six hits which resulted in one run and struck out five batters. Kassedy Midgley came in as relief and closed out final two outs of the fifth inning giving up zero hits and finishing strong for Sterling.

The Lady Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, March 25 as they take on McPherson College in Sterling, Kan.
