Lady Warriors get two wins in doubleheader against Saint Mary

Sterling College softball got two wins in a doubleheader against Saint Mary University on Saturday, March 15.

Game 1

The first game proved to be a challenge for the Lady Warriors as they trailed until the bottom of the fifth inning and were able to turn the game around to come away with the 8-5 win.

Saint Mary started off hot with a two-run home run from A McDaniel in the top of the first followed by a single from G Rose which resulted in two more runs as the Spires took the 4-0 lead.

The Lady Warriors remained calm and collected eventually getting a single run home run of their own from Madilynn Green in the bottom of the fourth.

The bottom of the fifth inning is where Sterling came to life with a double from Kelly Hirlas to bring home Mariah Cunningham, a double from Desiree Perales to bring home Mallory Seidel and Hirlas, and a single from Pheobi Waller to bring Perales to home plate giving Sterling the 5-4 lead.

The Lady Spires did not go away quietly as they tied the game up in the top of the sixth inning.

However, Sterling came back with a vengeance starting with another single-run home run from Mary Casillas in the bottom of the sixth. Cunningham added to the score with a double to bring home same Samantha Graham and Seidel brought Cunningham home with a double of her own to give Sterling the 8-5 lead.

MacKenzie Viehland kept the top of the seventh quiet from the circle with three quick outs to solidity the Lady Warriors victory.

Viehland pitched all seven innings for the Warriors, facing 32 batters, throwing 64 strikes on 103 pitches. She surrendered eight hits which were converted into five runs, she threw eight strikeouts while only walking one.

Game 2

The Lady Warriors carried over the momentum from game one to run away with game two, beating the Lady Spires 12-4 in five innings.

Sterling came out hot with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Perales got things started off for the Lady Warriors with a single to bring home Cunningham. Aiyana Campos hit a single for her own to bring Seidel to home plate. Waller singled to bring home Hirlas followed by a sacrifice fly from Green to advance Perales to home.

Graham hit a two-RBI single bringing home Campos and Waller, who scored on an obstruction by the catcher at home plate. Cunningham followed this with a single to bring home Graham, to finish the first inning with the Warriors up 7-0.

Sterling continued to score in the bottom of the third inning with another single from Cunningham to bring home both Graham and Green. She followed this up by stealing third and capitalizing on an error by the catcher to run home.

Saint Mary battled back in the fourth and fifth innings putting up two runs in each. However, Sterling's Seidel ended the game with a two-run single that brought home Graham and Mya' Dunn to finish the game in the bottom of the fifth with the Lady Warriors winning 12-4.

Allie Olivarria took charge for Sterling from the circle, she faced 20 batters through five innings, throwing 36 strikes on 57 pitches. She surrendered three hits which resulted in four runs, walking one batter and striking out four.
