Lady Warrior Offense Explodes in Wins Over Southwestern

Sterling, Kan. – The Lady Warriors had a pair of convincing wins over Southwestern College on Friday afternoon scoring a total of 41 runs in the two games with 44 hits. Sterling took care of business on nearly every opportunity.

Game 1 – Sterling 16, SWC 8

Sterling got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning scoring three runs right off the bat. It was an impressive hitting display in the third inning as the Warriors scored nine more runs on eight hits. Aiyana Campos got things rolling with a 2-run homerun. Madilynn Green immediately followed it up with a triple to right to keep things rolling. Kelly Hirlas knocked Green in with a single and then back-to-back doubles by Alexxis Thompson and Sam Graham knocked in two more runs. Three batters later, Phoebi Waller, known most for her speed and not her power, hit a ball to the left center field fence for a base clearing triple. Sterling scored two more runs after the triple to make it nine runs in the inning.

As the game seemed to be in the bag, the Moundbuilders answered Sterling's nine runs with eight of their own. The one big inning is all they would muster as Sterling tacked on four runs in the late innings to push the lead to eight in the sixth inning for a run-rule victory.

Desiree Perales led Sterling with 3 hits while four others had 2 hits apiece. The extra base hits continued to come for Sterling as Campos had her big 2 run homerun in the third and Cheyenne Cunningham added a solo shot. Sterling had a pair of triples, one by Waller and the other by Green, and a couple of doubles by Thompson and Graham. Campos and Perales each had 3 RBIs for Sterling. Allie Olivarria runs, just one was earned. Olivarria added 6 strikeouts.

Game 2 – Sterling 25, SWC 3

Sterling lit up the scoreboard in game two with some incredible numbers offensively. They scored 25 runs on 27 hits. Eleven different Warriors recorded at least one hit in the game. Sterling scored 3 once again in the first, 12 in the second, 7 in the third and 3 in the fourth. Southwestern was able to scratch across one run in each the second, third and fifth.

Perales once again led the way for Sterling going 5 for 5 in game two, giving her 8 hits between the two games. Alyssa Mason also had a perfect day going 4 for 4, and Hirlas added 4 hits as well going 4 for 5. Mya' Dunn had her first triple of the season, as Perales had a pair of doubles and Campos added one for herself. Mason, who was also pitching, knocked in 5 runs to help herself out. Perales added 4 RBIs to go along with 3 RBIs each from Campos and Dunn. Mason pitched three and two thirds innings giving up two runs on six hits while striking out four, but came out of the game one out shy of qualifying for the win. MacKenzie Viehland came out of the bullpen to pitch an inning and a third giving up one run and two hits and struck out one. Viehland is credited with the win, her second of the season.

The Lady Warriors are now 16-12 this season, 4-4 in KCAC play this season. They play at McPherson on Tuesday next week and at Avila on Saturday next week. Sterling currently sits in 7th in the KCAC.
