Softball Splits with Hastings

Sterling, Kan. – Lady Warrior softball split games with Hastings College in their home opening series Friday afternoon. Both teams started slow, but offense abounded by the end of game 1.

Game 1

Hastings got on the board in the top of the first and Sterling answered in the second. Hastings added one more run in the fourth before Sterling answered with 2 runs in the fifth. Sterling added what appeared to be a security run in the sixth to make the score 4-2. Hastings bats awoke in the seventh when they scored 5 runs on 4 hits with just one error by the Warriors. All of a sudden Sterling was down 3. Alyssa Mason tied things up in the bottom of the seventh when she hit a 3-run shot to straight away center field to send the game into extra innings. Unfortunately for Sterling, they were outscored 4-1 in the eighth. After only allowing 2 runs in the first 6 innings, they gave up nine in the final two innings and ended the game with an 11-8 loss.

Desiree Perales, Kelly Hirlas, and Madilynn Green each had 2 hits for the Warriors. Mason's 3 RBIs led the team. MacKenzie Viehland took the loss for Sterling.

Game 2

The second game of the double header was all Sterling. Allie Olivarria got the start and was relentless in the pitcher's circle. She spread out 7 hits over six innings and struck out 5 and did not give up a run. Sterling scored 4 in the first, 1 in the second and 3 more to close things out in the sixth. Mason, Hirlas, and Phoebi Waller each had multi-hit games. Six different Warrriors knocked in runs in the second game, led by Mason with 2. The Warriors cruised to an 8-0 win to close out the non conference series.

Sterling is now 2-2 this season and looks forward to a weekend series against Baptist Bible College on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
