Warriors Sweep Moundbuilders

Sterling, Kan. - The Sterling College Warriors gain two more wins on their record as they beat Southwestern College in a doubleheader this last week. This bumps their KCAC record to 6-10 with just four more opponents to take on before the end of their conference season.

Game One- Sterling -7 Southwestern -4

The Warriors started their attack in the third inning, scoring three runs to take the lead. A two out rally paved the way for the Lady Warriors. Back to back doubles by Sam Araiza and Alyssa Mason got the scoring going. Aiyana Campos followed up with a single, allowing Mason to come around to score. Campos scored on Brennah Jimenez's RBI single. A line out finished the inning, but not before the damage was done. The score bumped up to 3-0 for the Warriors.

The Moundbuilders scored two runs in the fourth inning, but the Lady Warriors responded with four runs of their own. It started with Madilynn Green's single, followed by Kelly Hirlas' bunt single. Both advanced on Phoebi Waller's sac bunt. Araiza grounded out to the shortstop and Green scored from third. Hirlas scored right after on Mason's single. Campos hit a single, allowing Mason to advance to third and into scoring position. Jimenez brought Mason and Campos home on her 2 RBI single. The four runs that were tacked on made it 7-2 for the Warriors.

The Builders scored two runs in the sixth inning, making the score 7-4 by the end of the game. Mason and Adrianna Castillo shared the pitcher's mound this game. Mason pitched five innings and gave four runs on six hits and had three strikeouts. In Castillo's short time on the mound, she gave one hit and struck out one Southwestern batter.

Campos had 3 hits in the game and Mason, Jimenez, and Hirlas each tallied two hits. Jimenez knocked in 3 RBIs and Mason, 2.

Game Two- Sterling -4 Southwestern -0

Sterling came out and won their second game of the day scoring early and letting their pitching take care of the rest. The Warriors scored the first run in the first inning, made by Mason, as she moved around the bases one bag at a time. It started with Araiza hit by the pitch, followed by a Mason reaching on an error. Araiza was caught out on third during Campos' hit. Both Mason and Campos advanced on a wild pitch, putting themselves in a scoring position. Mason scored on a groundout by Jimenez. The inning wrapped up on Green's line out to the third baseman. Sterling led early, 1-0.

After a solid defense against the Moundbuilders, the Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. It started on a walk by Beyale, who advanced one base on a single by Makenna Linden. On a Moundbuilder error, Hirlas reached first and Beyale scored. Hirlas stole second, putting herself in scoring position. In back-to-back grounding outs, Linden and Hirlas scored. When the inning was finished, it was 4-0 for the Warriors.

The Warriors remained scoreless for the rest of the game, but kept the Moundbuilders from scoring as well through a tight defense and an incredible pitching performance by Allie Olivarria.

Allie Olivarria pitched the entire game against the Moundbuilders. She gave four hits and struck out one Moundbuilders batter, taking the win. She had a one-hitter heading into the 6th inning.

Linden was 2-2 in the contest, the only Lady Warrior with a multi-hit game. Araiza, Jimenez, Hirlas and P. Waller each knocked in a run.

The Warriors continue their conference against Tabor College on Apr. 19 in Hillsboro, Kan. The doubleheader begins at 3 pm. They then host the University of Saint Mary on their home field on Apr. 22. First pitch at 1 pm.
