Warriors take two wins against Threshers

North Newton, Kan.- The Sterling College Warriors won two games against the Bethel College Threshers, bumping up their KCAC record to 10-20.

Game One- Sterling -11 Bethel -4

The game had solid defense from both squads. The Threshers took the first two runs in the third inning. Sterling responded with five runs in the fourth inning. It started with a Brennah Jimenez single to the right center. Jimenez then advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on an Aiyana Campos single. Jimenez scored off of a successful bunt by Julia Beyale. Campos and Beyale put themselves in a scoring position after a wild pitch. Campos was thrown out at home when Kelly Hirlas dribbled one back to the pitcher. Beyale scored on an error made by the Thresher's catcher during Phoebi Waller's turn at bat. Sam Araiza walked and was followed by Alyssa Mason's double, bringing in Hirlas, Waller, and Araiza. The inning finished with the Warriors taking a 5-2 lead.

Sterling scored three more runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Campos hit a single and Beyale followed with a double. Casillas smacked a home run, bringing in all the runners. Bethel got out of what could have been a much bigger inning by doubling up Phoebi Waller. The Threshers scored one run, making it 8-3 in favor of the Warriors.

Sterling scored three runs in the seventh inning, all with two outs. Beyale reached first base after an error by the Thresher pitcher, then stole second to get herself in scoring position. Casillas walked and Beyale stole third. Hirlas singled to the right side, allowing Beyale and Casillas to score. Waller followed with a double to left field, allowing Hirlas to score. The Threshers scored one run in the final frame, but the Warriors closed the book with an 11-4 win.

Alyssa Mason pitched the complete game against the Threshers. She gave four runs on six hits and struck out ten Thresher batters, taking the win.

Game Two- Sterling -8 Bethel -4

The Warriors took another win against the Threshers in the second game, firing up toward the latter half of the competition. After two scoreless innings, Sterling scored four runs in the third inning. Casillas kicked off the inning with a home run. Hirlas followed up with a single and Waller with a successful bunt. Araiza doubled down the left line, allowing Hirlas and Waller to score. The bases ended up loaded after a single from Green and a walk Campos. Beyale walked, allowing Araiza to walk in. The Warriors were able to score 4 runs taking the early lead in the third inning.

The Warriors scored one run in the fourth inning, made by Waller. After being walked, Waller advanced on a single from Araiza and stole third. Waller took advantage of a passed ball and came around to score. The Threshers scored two runs, making it 5-2 in favor of the Warriors.

Bethel got one more run in the fifth inning. Sterling responded with one run in the sixth inning. The bases were loaded up as Casillas walked and Hirlas and Waller were hit by the pitch. Casillas was called out at home during Araiza's ground ball to first. Mason struck out swinging. Green walked allowing Hirlas to score from third. Sterling held a 6-3 lead heading into the seventh inning.

The Warriors scored two runs in the final inning of the game. With one out and a runner on second, Casillas tripled allowing Beyale to score. Casillas scored on a Hirlas single. That was it for the Warriors. The Threshers scored one run, making the final score 8-4 in favor of the Warriors.

Allie Olivarria pitched the entire game against the Threshers, taking the win. She gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out five Thresher batters.

The Warriors continue their conference play with a rescheduled doubleheader against a Southwestern College on their home field on Apr. 13, the first pitch is at 3 pm. They then battle against (RV) Oklahoma Wesleyan University on their own field on Apr. 15. The first pitch is at 1 pm.
