
Jones has record-breaking day at ESU Relays
Sterling College track had a record-breaking day at the ESU Relays on Saturday, March 29 in Emporia, Kan. hosted by Emporia State University.
On the men's side, Charles Jones set the tone by breaking Sterling's school record in both the long and triple jump. Jones finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 15.05m (49-4.5), the longest jump in the NAIA this year. In the long jump he placed ninth with a jump of 7.13m (23-4.25) the seventh longest jump in the NAIA this year.
Maurice Gray and Tod Mastin also compete in the long jump for the Warriors. Gray jumped 6.76m (22-2.25) to finish 14th and Mastin finished 40th with a jump of 5.79m (19-0).
In the men's open high jump, Jones took home the win with a jump of 2.01m (6-7) the fourth highest jump in the NAIA this year which also exceeds the NCCAA qualifying stardard for the Outdoor Championships, while Mastin placed 10th with a jump of 1.76m (5-9.25).
In the throws, Blake Robertson finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 14.63m (48-0) while Malachi Bell and Brayden Kermode placed 14th and 30th with throws of 12.76m (41-10.5) and 10.64m (34-11), respectively.
Robertson and Kermode also competed in the discus throw where they went 16th and 28th with throws of 43.13m (141-6) and 36.4m (119-5), respectively.
In the hammer throw, Robertson placed 15th with a mark of 42.83m (140-6) while Bell threw a 39.19m (128-7) to finish 20th and Kermode placed 26th with a throw of 36.37m (119-4).
On the track, Daryen Jefferson competed in the 10k run where he finished sixth with a time of 35:00.5 to qualify for the NCCAA Outdoor Championship. Wesley Brantley represented the Warriors in the 800m run where he finished 42nd with a time of 2:19.38.
On the women's side, Aliyah McClanahan represented the Lady Warriors in the shot put and the discus. She finished 15th in the discus with an NCCAA qualifying standard throw of 36.00m (118-1) and 27th in the shot put with a throw of 9.00m (29-6.5).
On the track, Lana Rodriguez competed in the 3000m steeple where she placed ninth with a time of 15:03.40. She also competed in the 1500m run where she ran a time of 6:21.70 to finish 51st.
Also competing in the 1500m run were Janie Perico and Audrey Blake. Perico finished in 40th with a time of 5:42.56 while Blake ran a 6:47.57 to place 52nd.
Perico also competed in the 800 where she ran a time of 2:41.35 to finish 31st.
Sterling's next meet will be at the Friends University Spring Open Thursday-Saturday, April 3-5 in Wichita, Kan.
