Warriors Take First Conference Loss at Tabor

Hillsboro, Kan. – The Sterling Men's soccer team has had great success this season. They traveled to Tabor College to take on the Bluejays and came into the game unbeaten in KCAC play with a 5-0-1 record. Sterling fell to the Bluejays 3-2 in a match that had a couple of controversial calls.

Tabor got things rolling offensively scoring their first goal of the match in the 24th minute. Sterling answered almost immediately scoring less than two and a half minutes later. Matt Dale took a throw in and dribbled from left to right across the front of the box and fired a shot that left the Tabor Keeper with no chance for a save. Sterling and Tabor went into the halftime break tied at 1.

Tabor retook the lead in the 59th minute and added a security goal in the 71st minute. With almost twenty minutes left to play, there was plenty of time for the Warriors to mount a comeback, but not so much time that they could waste any. The Warrior's, Ruben Guzman found the net on what looked at first to be an offside call. Daniel Stone, who would have been offside had he touched the ball, shielded the ball as it was rolling to the awaiting Guzman who fired the ball top shelf into the goal. After much deliberation between the Head Referee and one of the Assistant Referees, the call was reversed and the goal counted. This was the second time a goal was reversed in the match after a player was called offside. Both Sterling and Tabor benefitted from these calls.

Sterling was not able to find the net again and continue their unbeaten streak in KCAC play. With the 3-2 loss, Sterling drops to 8-3-1 (5-1-1) in the conference. That mark is still good for second place in the KCAC.

Sterling travels to Friends University on Saturday, October 7, for a 5 pm game against the Falcons.
