Warrior Soccer Starts KCAC Season 2-0

Leavenworth, Kan. – The Warrior men continued their hot start Saturday evening over the Saint Mary Spires in a 3-0 win. It was a slow start for Sterling as it took them until the second half to score their first goal. But it all Sterling coming out of the break.

Sterling did not take a shot in the first half as they patiently awaited their opportunities. They took advantage of their opportunities in the second half scoring on 3 of just 5 total shots. Mateus Lara continued his offensive deluge by getting Sterling on the board in the 48th minute. Sterling maintained the 1-0 lead for the next thirty minutes before they were able to get another good look. Daniel Stone put the ball in the box and found Stevy Kama in front of the net for a header goal. An impressive play it was. Sterling was up 2-0 in the 79th minute looking to close things out. And close things out they did. Sterling kept attacking the offensive third of the field. The Spires keeper made a nice save but was not able to maintain control of the ball and Jonathan Torres played the back side well and picked up the rebound for an easy score. That security goal happened in the 85th minute to secure the 3-0 win for Sterling.

Lara, Kama and Torres scored the three goals for Sterling while Stone came in with the lone assist. Marcelo Fuentes made 5 saves in the clean sheet victory over the Spires. The Warriors were outshot 13-5 in the contest, but were efficient in their opportunities. Sterling improves to 5-2 (2-0) this season and sit in a four-way tie atop the KCAC standings.

The Warriors travel to York University on Wednesday afternoon and play their game at 1 pm before the Sterling women take the field. Saturday they will travel to Avila University for a 3:30 pm start.
