In an intense showdown at the Gleason Center on Feb. 15, the Sterling College Warriors pulled off a narrow victory against the Avila University Eagles with a final score of 70-69. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with Sterling overcoming a halftime deficit to claim the win.
The first half saw the Eagles take an early lead, ending the period up 34-28, courtesy of strong performances from their players. However, the Warriors showcased their tenacity in the second half. Led by the outstanding efforts of Julian Smith, who scored a game-high 24 points, and Mooch Austin, who added 20 points, Sterling College mounted a remarkable comeback. Smith's critical three-pointers in the dying seconds were pivotal, pushing the Warriors ahead for a dramatic finish.
Jimmy Causey also made significant contributions with 10 rebounds, helping the Warriors to edge out their opponents in a tightly contested battle. Sterling's second-half performance was characterized by resilience and strategic plays, which were crucial in their victory. Notable moments included Smith's back-to-back threes and both off of Austin's assists.
With this victory, Sterling College moves to a 8-12 in conference, 13-13 overall record for the season. The Warriors will look to maintain their momentum when they host McPherson College (10-10, 12-14) on Feb. 19 at the Gleason Center.
