
Sterling comes up short to Bethel in tight contest
In a riveting basketball showdown at North Newton, Kan. on Wednesday 5, the Sterling College Warriors faced a challenging game against the Bethel College Threshers, ultimately falling 72-82. Despite a strong performance from the Warriors, which saw top scorers Julian Smith and Jayden Garrison putting up 20 and 18 points respectively, the team couldn't secure a win against their formidable opponents.
The game started off rocky for Sterling as Bethel went on a 7-0 run early in the match. However, the Warriors quickly recovered, answering back with a 15-3 run and making it a competitive first half. The teams exchanged leads several times before Bethel managed to take control by scoring the final seven points of the half, establishing a 39-35 lead. Sterling fought valiantly in the second half but was unable to overcome Bethel's early advantage.
Along with leading the Warriors in scoring, Smith also led Sterling's defensive push with six rebounds and two steals. Mooch Austin led the Warriors in steals and assists with three each.
Additional notable performances for Sterling included Elias Ngoga, who contributed 12 points and blocked two shots and Jaivion Reid who came off the bench to contribute five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Despite the loss, the game highlighted the tenacity and skill of the Warriors' roster.
Looking ahead, Sterling College will aim to bounce back in their next encounter against Oklahoma Wesleyan University (14-3, 18-5) in Bartlesville, Okla., on Saturday, Feb. 8. With a current record of 12-11, the Warriors are keen to improve their standing and secure a win in the upcoming game.
