Warriors Struggle in clash against Moundbuilders
Sterling College Warriors faced a tough outing at the Gleason Center on Jan. 18, 2025, where they went up against the Southwestern College Moundbuilders. The Moundbuilders came out on top with a 61-42 victory over the home team, extending the Warriors' season record to 5-7 in league and 10-8 overall.
The halftime scoreboard showed a widening gap, with Sterling trailing 18-34, a lead that stretched further by the game's conclusion. Mooch Austin was the standout player for the Warriors, securing 11 points and three assists, alongside notable contributions from Jayden Garrison with nine points and Gavin Dobbins who added eight points, including key three-point shots.
Despite efforts from Austin and Dobbins, along with defensive plays by Elias Ngoga, who logged seven rebounds and two blocks, the team struggled on the court. Their shooting average hovered at a disheartening 26%, a statistic that reflected the game's challenging pace and pressure brought by the Moundbuilders' robust defense and strong bench performance, which contributed a significant 32 points.
Moreover, the Warriors were outrebounded significantly, with Southwestern commanding a 50-27 lead in rebounds, capitalizing on 12 second-chance points.
Looking ahead, Sterling College (5-7, 10-8) aims to rebound from this loss in their upcoming game against McPherson College Bulldogs (6-6, 8-10) on Jan. 22, 2025, in McPherson, Kan. The team remains determined to make the necessary adjustments and improve on their performance as they progress through the season.
