Warriors Overcome Early Deficit, Win on Last Second Free Throw
Fremont, Neb. – Warrior basketball headed north for nonconference play against Midland University. Midland came into the game undefeated and the Warriors brought in one loss. Sterling was down early before coming back just before the half and took a one point deficit into the locker room. The second half was neck and neck most of the way and it came down to a free throw by freshman Julian Smith. With the game tied at 81, Smith was fouled on a rebound and got the chance to hit two free throws. He hit the first free throw to give Sterling the lead. Unselfishly, he missed the second not allowing Midland to set up a play and have a last second heave for the win. Sterling completed the comeback win and brought home an 82-81 win.
Smith came off the bench and led Warrior scoring with 26 points. None were bigger than the free throws he took at the end of regulation. Next in line was Mooch Austin who scored 16 points in the game. Elijah Herron led Sterling in both rebounds and assists with 6 and 5, respectively.
Sterling is now 4-1 this season with one more nonconference game in Sterling on Tuesday evening against Mission University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 pm. The KCAC season begins on Saturday when the Warriors travel to York for a 3 pm start.
