Canaan Pitches Gem; Warriors Take One of Three from (RV) Friends

Wichita, Kan. – The Warriors faced another round of tough competition in conference play on Friday and Saturday as they headed to Wichita to take on the (RV) Friends University Falcons. Sterling jumped on Friends early and took advantage of a pitching gem by Trent Canaan and got a game 1, 5-2 win. Games 2 and 3 did not end as well with Sterling giving up 23 runs over the last two games and were 1-hit in the final game of the series. Sterling lost the final two games 15-5 and 8-0.

Game 1 – Sterling 5, Friends 2

Sterling rallied around some early runs and a strong pitching performance by Trent Canaan as they held on to a 5-2 win in the first game of the weekend series. The Warriors scored 4 runs in the first and added another run in the third while giving up a single run in both the first and sixth innings.

Canaan went the distance giving up just the two runs on seven hits while striking out a pair. Dustin Chartrand and Eduardo Tarafa combined for four of Sterling's nine hits. Tarafa had a triple and Andrew Dutro and Nate Heffline each had doubles. Heffline and Austin Santiago knocked in two runs for the Warriors with Dutro bringing around one of his own.

Game 2 – Sterling 5, Friends 15

Sterling jumped out early, once again scoring four runs in the first inning. They added another in the second making it 5-0 early, but that was all they could score the rest of the way. Friends knocked in five in the bottom of the second to tie things up and added seven more in the third and began running away with the game. Three more runs were score by the Falcons in the fifth and with no answer from the Warriors, the game concluded after 7 innings of play with Friends winning 15-5.

Six Warriors had hits in the game. Santiago knocked in two more runs for Sterling with Nicholas Keller and Albert Bisono adding one each. Chartrand stole a couple of bases with James Easter stealing another. Andrew Mason was the starter and took the loss with Tyler Duffey and Ryan Speer working in relief.

Game 3 – Sterling 0, Friends 8

Austin Santiago recorded the Warriors only hit with a one out triple in the first. From that point on the Warriors only reached base by walk. Friends scored three in the second, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth to account for their eight runs.

Dustin Chartrand got the start and gave up seven runs in four and two thirds innings. Tyler Duffey pitched an inning and a third in relief.

After the weekend, the Warriors are 14-18 and are now 8-13 in conference play. They currently sit at 10th in the KCAC standings and play Tuesday afternoon in Sterling against Kansas Wesleyan, the number two team in the conference. This will be the first game of the season set with the Coyotes.
