Baseball Loses Second Game against KWU in Conference

Sterling -1 Kansas Wesleyan -6

Salina, Kan.- The Sterling College baseball team continued their conference play against the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes this past Tuesday. The Warriors could only get one run in the final inning, but it was too late to make a comeback from the Coyotes' six-point lead.

The first inning was quick as both teams kept their defense tight. The Coyotes kicked off the second inning with a home run, scoring the first run. In the third inning, after two outs had been made against the Warriors, Luis Morales made it to first base but was denied the chance to come around after Dustin Chartrand grounded out. The Warriors kept the Coyote attack short with a strong defense in the third inning as well.

The Warriors were kept off the bases in the fourth inning. The Coyotes scored one run in the fourth inning. The fifth inning held a little more promise for the Warriors. Uziel Santos was hit by the pitch, and was pinch ran by James Easter. Easter advanced to second during a wild pitch. Elvis Rumaldo walked during his turn on the bat, but both he and Easter were left on base as Morales lined out to the right field. The Coyotes scored one run, making the score 3-0 by the end of the fifth inning in favor of the Coyotes.

The Coyotes scored one run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning, building the score to 6-0. The Warriors struggled to make any moves until the ninth inning, where Easter scored. With one out against the Warriors, Santos singled to right field and then was pinch-run by Easter. After three walks, Easter made his way across home plate. The Warriors were cut short in their opportunities as Aaron Johnson struck out and Layne Thacker fouled out, ending the game.

Five Warrior pitchers took the mound against the Coyotes. Damon Redeker pitched five innings, giving three runs on six hits and had two strikeouts. Redeker also took the loss. Reid Heidtbrink gave one run on one hit. David Lira gave two runs in his time on the mound. Chris Issac gave up two hits. Camrin Wleczyk pitched one inning, striking out two Coyote batters.

The Warriors continue their conference play on Mar 24-25 in Hillsboro, Kan where they face Tabor College in a triple header. Sterling will then host a game against McPherson College on March 28, first pitch at 2 pm.
