Women’s Soccer Falls Short at York

York, Neb. – It was a defensive game for the Lady Warrior soccer team on Wednesday afternoon. They traveled to York University for the KCAC matchup. York was strong offensively and put pressure on the Warrior defense throughout the match, as the Panthers walked away with a 5-1 win.

The Panthers got on the board early, scoring in the first minute. They put goal number two in the net in the 12th minute, opening up the game early on. They put one more goal in before halftime with a late goal in the 40th minute. Sterling found themselves on the defensive end of the field most of the way, recording just one shot in the first half. At the break it was 3-0, York.

Giving the Warriors a glimmer of hope in the second half, Francesca Vilca got the Warriors on the board in the 50th minute. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they only had one more shot in the game and the 3-1 score at that time was as close as they would be the rest of the way. Midway through the second half, York go two more goals less than 90 seconds apart making it 5-1 Panthers. That is where it stayed the rest of the way.

Shay Gibbs had eight saves in the match, but was also credited with the 5 goals scored against. Sterling now holds a 4-3 record this season, 1-2 in KCAC play. The Panthers improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Sterling travels to Avila University on Saturday to take on the Eagles with a 1 pm start time. Avila had a tough preseason, but has found their way in the early KCAC season.
