Men’s Soccer Advances in NCCAA Central Regional

Sterling, Kan. – The Sterling Men's Soccer team lives to play another day. Just a few days from being eliminated from the KCAC conference tournament, the Warriors set their sites on another prize. Sterling hosted Ecclesia College in the opening round of the NCCAA DI Central Regional soccer tournament. Ecclesia game to Sterling having lost once already earlier in the season. Sterling came away with a 5-1 win, earning the opportunity to play another day.

Sterling took the lead in the 20th minute and never looked back. Juan Sepulveda got things going for Sterling with an assist from Angel Jimenez-Cortes. Twelve minutes later, Mateaus Lara took advantage of a nice pass from Daniel Stone and put the ball in the back of the net. Sterling led 2-0 at the half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Ecclesia reminded Sterling that they were not done yet, when they got their first, and only, goal of the match. The celebration was short-lived when Keegan Witbooi pounded the rebound from a goal kick into the net from 20 yards out. Witbooi also scored the next goal on a nice give and go from Mateus Lara in the 85th minute. Stevy Kama did not want to be left out, getting his security goal in the 87th minute to seal the deal for the Warriors.

Four different Warriors scored in the match. Witbooi with two goals and Kama, Sepulveda and Lara with the other 3. Marcelo Fuentes was the goalie of record.

Sterling continues their postseason Tuesday afternoon, November 14th against Wayland Baptist in Sterling. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm. With a win, Sterling will play for the NCCAA DI Central Regional Championship on either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on their opponent. If they win the regional they will schedule a trip to Florida for the NCCAA National Championship Tournament.
