Slow Start Costs Warriors in KCAC Loss

Sterling, Kan. – Sterling College men's soccer is starting to show more and more that they are a second half team. Wednesday afternoon they got in too much of a hole to dig out of. Kansas Wesleyan came to Sterling and left campus with a 5-2 over the Warriors.

There were not many shots by either team. There were just a total of 14 shots on goal between the two teams. KWU had the wind at their backs in the first half and that turned out to be the advantage they needed. They wasted no time scoring in the 6th, 21st, and 39th minutes in the first half. Sterling was not able to get anything going as they were facing the 20 mph wind straight out of the south. The Warriors trailed 3-0 after 45 minutes.

The second half showed promise when Keegan Witbooi got the Warrior's first score in the 57th minute. KWU answered ten minutes later to recapture a three goal lead. Sterling cut the lead to two once again when Mateus Lara crossed a ball that was touched in front of the net by Angel Jimenez-Cortes to Cameron Sinclair. The lead was just 4-2 with just under 20 minutes left to play in the game. That was all Sterling's offense could muster as they watched KWU tack on a security goal in the 84th minute. The final score was 5-2 in favor of the Coyotes.

Sterling had the advantage 6-3 on corner kicks, but were outshot overall 14-12. Marcelo Fuentes had 3 saves in the contest. Sterling is now 8-5-1 (5-3-1) and currently sits in 5th place in the KCAC standings. The Warriors play in front of the Homecoming crowd at 3pm on Friday afternoon. They take on Southwestern College who is currently 10th in the KCAC standings.
