Austin and Garrison Lead Comeback in Win Over Avila

 

Kansas City, Mo. – The Warrior men had to earn their victory in comeback fashion Wednesday night at Avila. Sterling trailed most of the first half before coming from being to take a much-needed 79-74 victory from Avila.

Sterling was slow to get going and found themselves in a double-digit deficit once again in the first half. The lead was cut to just 7 points at halftime, 44-37. Sterling was able to keep it close relying on Brandon Doss who had a perfect offensive first half going 4-4 on field goals and 3-3 on three point attempts. He had 11 first half points.

Two strong performances by Sterling gave them life and got them back into the driver's seat before the night was over. Jayden Garrison and Mooch Austin combined to score 30 of Sterling's 42 second half points, each accounting for 15 points in the half. The Warriors took over early in the second half and did not relinquish the lead.

Both Austin and Garrison had 21 points for the game. Chris Drake continues to dominate the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of play.

The win puts Sterling at 11-13 (7-12) this season. Even with the win, Sterling still may be on the outside looking in come KCAC tournament time. Sterling is 2 games behind Bethel College with three games to play, one of which is a head-to-head with Bethel.

Sterling takes the long road trip on Saturday to Evangel University in Springfield, Mo. The game is scheduled for a 5 pm tipoff.
