SWEDES SHUTOUT THE WARRIORS 14-0 IN GAME 1 BUT FALL IN GAME 2

Lindsborg, Kan.- The Bethany College Swedes hosted the Sterling College Warriors in a weekday double header, Wednesday, April 3rd. The Swedes split with the Warriors. Game 1 went the Swedes after finishing 14-0 in 5 innings and Game 2 went to the Warriors, finishing 10-8.

Game 1: The Swedes came out hot in the opening innings of Game 1 against the Warriors and absolutely dominated. The Swedes would earn 6 runs in the first inning alone and then come back and score 8 runs in the second inning. Bottom of the 1st inning, Maggie Heath, Ulissa Rivas, and Tamia Butler hit singles that advanced runners who scored, 3-0. Allison Rosa was walked with bases loaded, 4-0. Melinda Cratty hit a single to center field which brought home two runners, 6-0 all before the end of the first inning. The Swedes kept the Warriors from scoring in the top of the 2nd inning. Bottom of the 2nd, Ulissa Rivas made it on base via error which allowed Shantell Evans to score, 7-0, which started another exciting inning for Bethany. Tamia Butler singled to shortstop, and Ulissa Rivas made it home, 8-0.  Next up, Allison Rosa hits a double to right field, bringing home Katherine Range, 9-0. Melinda Cratty followed that up with a double to right field as well earned 2 RBI, 11-0. The Swedes weren't done, Brianna Buck singled to center field and brought home Melinda Cratty, 12-0. Maggie Heath singled to shortshop and Brianna Buck scored, 13-0. Finally, Ulissa Rivas hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Destiny Espinosa for the final run of the game, 14-0. Final score was 14-0 in only five innings.

Dylann Baker in the circle for Bethany for Game 1 and faced 18 batters and threw 46 strikes out of 73 pitches.

Game 2:  Quick start for the Warriors in Game 2 after being shut out in the Game 1. Sterling scored two runs in the top of the first inning and another run in the top of the 2nd inning for a 3-0 lead over the Swedes. However, the 4th inning, the Warriors took off and scored an additional 3 runs, making the lead 6-0. The Swedes will cut down the lead by half with three runs of their own. Katherine Range singled to third base but runners advanced and allowed Destiny Espinosa to score, 6-1. Next, Caitlyn Meyers will hit a double to right center earning 2 RBI with Ulissa Rivas and Shantell Evans scoring, 6-3. Things would go quiet in the 5th inning until the start of the 6th inning. Sterling would score two more runs, extending their lead to five, the score was 8-3. Bethany would have a response to this in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Swedes would go on to score three runs, cutting the lead to only two, 8-6. Allison Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to center field giving Tamia Butler the opportunity to score, 8-4. Next, Melinda Cratty would single to right center and Katherine Ranged scored, 8-5. Hitting a single to left field, Destiny Espinosa helped advanced the runners and Caitlyn Meyers scored, 8-6. Top of the 7th inning, the Warriors scored two more runs to secure their lead heading into the bottom of the 7th, 10-6. The pressure was on, and the Swedes would try and make a last second comeback. Melinda Cratty hit a single to right center, earning 2 RBI with Briana Lopez scoring and Caitlyn Meyers scoring, 10-8. Unfortunately, the Swedes would only score the two runs before the end of the game. Final score was 10-8 in favor of the Warriors.

Lilliana Martinez started on the mound for Game 2 and faced 19 batters and threw 39 strikes out of 52 pitches before being relieved by Morgan Pennycuff. Morgan Pennycuff faced 19 batters and threw 49 strikes out of 77 pitches.
