Spires Defeat Sterling College in Home Opener 37-11

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Football team played Sterling College in their home opener on Saturday, winning by a score of 37-11.

Sterling opened the scoring on their first drive of the evening after a seven-play 76-yard drive that ended in a field goal giving them the only lead of the night, 3-0. On the ensuing drive, the Spires had good field position and took advantage of it when Raymond Webster scored on a 19-yard touchdown run, making it 7-3. The Warriors stalled out and gave the ball back to Saint Mary, who scored again when Erick Covington hit Josh Walker on a 37-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-3. Zach Scott recovered a loose ball to open the second quarter and set up another Spires touchdown. Saint Mary scored two more touchdowns before the half, one being a pick-six by Landon Beecham to send the Spires into the half with a 43-3 lead.

The Spire's offensive production dwindled in the second half, kicking a field goal with three minutes to go in the third quarter. The Warriors tried to make a late comeback and drove down the field and scored a touchdown to make the score 37-11 but would not score again after that. Covington went 9-17 with 118 yards, two passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, Hennessey Thomas led the team with 11 total tackles, one sack, and three pass breakups.
