LATE PICK-6 SEALS SWEDES LOSS

LATE PICK-6 SEALS SWEDES LOSS

Sterling, Kan. – The Bethany College Football team took the road to Sterling, Kansas for a conference match up against the Sterling College Warriors. The Swedes were coming fresh off a win and looked to make it two in a row.

Bethany started off the game with the ball, but their first drive ended in a punt. On the following possession for the Warriors, Zemonda Wilson would force a fumble that was recovered by David Sweetman at the Warriors' 48-yardline. It would only take on play for Peyton Mainolfi to find Demetric Toney for a 48-yard touchdown followed by a Ryan Morales extra point to put the Swedes up 7-0. On the kickoff, Sterling would make a house call to even it at 7-7. Later in the quarter, Sterling would take the lead 14-7 to cap off a 4-play, 97-yard drive.

In the second period, following a few series that ended in punts, Landry Shields would find Ntakirutimana Ettiene for a 53-yard touchdown that would cut the deficit to 1. Just before halftime, the Swedes defense would stuff the Warriors at the goal line forcing a turnover on downs at the 1-yardline.

To open the second half, Sterling would score quickly by way of a 61-yard touchdown pass to push their lead back to 7. A couple of drives later, Landry Shields would lead a 7-play, 53-yard drive that resulted in another touchdown for Demetric Toney. Ryan Morales would convert the extra point to tie it at 20-20.

In the fourth quarter, both teams would remain relatively quiet as plenty of punts were kicked and downed throughout the quarter, but, with 5:45 left in the period, Shields' pass was deflected at the line and caught by a Sterling lineman who lateralled the ball to a teammate who then scored. That would be the final blow as Bethany was unable to answer back on the following drive and Sterling was able to run the clock out. The Swedes would fall 27-20.

Landry Shields would lead the Swedes passing attack with 127 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zamarion Spencer would lead the Swedes in rushing with 93 yards on 18 attempts. Michael Young would pace the Bethany receiving corps with 4 receptions, but Demetric Toney would lead with 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Julian Carpenter would lead the Swedes in total tackles and would also record a tackle for loss. David Sweetman would tally a sack while Braydon Pratt and Calvin Geans would combine for a sack. Zeke Mumford would record his longest punt of his career with a 62-yard punt.

As a team, the Bethany offense would pretty even as they would record 187 passing yards and 162 rushing yards. The Swedes would average 5.0 yards per play throughout the contest.
