Men's Soccer Ties With Sterling After Exciting First Half

Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team continued KCAC play Saturday night against Sterling College, tying 2-2. The Spires are now 4-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play.

Period one saw all the goals in the evening's contest Sterling got on the board first just one minute into the game, putting the Spires down 1-0 early. However, Saint Mary pressed hard offensively and, at the thirty-minute mark, got on the board with a goal of their own, coming off the foot of Anthony Rangel and making it 1-1. Sterling had a quick response to the Spire goals, and five minutes after the equalizer, the Warriors scored to regain the lead at 2-1. With under ten minutes to go in the first half, Paul Trejo scored from just inside the penalty box to even thing out at 2-2.

The Spires continued to create chances in the second period and had a man advantage after Sterling received a red car twenty minutes into the half. Even with the man advantage, the Spires were unable to score a goal to take the lead and seal a victory. Offensively Paul Trejo led Saint Mary with a goal and an assist on the night.

The Spires will be on the road for a mid-week matchup against Kansas Wesleyan at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Salina, Kansas.
