SWEDES WIN SERIES 2-1 AWAY IN STERLING

SWEDES WIN SERIES 2-1 AWAY IN STERLING

Sterling, Kan. - The Bethany College Baseball team made the trip to Sterling, Kansas in an attempt to find their first series win away from home. A one-sided opening game would make their chances seem bleak. Despite this, the resilience shown by the Swedes would make sure that they wouldn't go out without a fight. Game 2 showed that the Swedes could be just as dominant, but Game 3 really required each team to give their all. The Swedes while struggling on occasion, would get right back up and strike back harder to take the series 2-1. With their first series win of the season, the Swedes look to the future with greater confidence.

Game 1

The opening bout saw the Warriors take an early lead with 3 runs in the first inning. The Swedes would trail by 4 before getting their first run, which came in the 4th inning. The excitement would end early for the Swedes as the Warriors would extend their lead, finishing the game in favor of the team from Sterling 14-1. Israel Brenes would score the sole run for the Swedes in this game. Despite the result, the Swedes only had 2 fewer hits than the Warriors. In total the Warriors had 12 hits while the Swedes had a respectable 10.

Game 2

The second game would show a strong reaction by the Swedes. By the second inning, the Swedes would score 5 runs and would maintain the momentum by scoring five more in the later innings. Bethany's defensive play also allowed for 6 shutout innings, with pitcher Willian Figueroa-Soto striking out 9 batters. Connor Crayton would lead the team in RBIs with 4 in total. Despite the Warriors scoring five runs in an attempt to make a comeback, it would ultimately not be enough as the Swedes would go on to win 10-5. Both teams now tied in the series, were now looking towards the final game.

Game 3

With both teams looking to win the series, both had to be at their best to stand a chance. Sterling seemed to have the upper hand in the first two inning by scoring 5 runs. Those runs wouldn't be unanswered for long as the Swedes would score 6 runs in the 3rd inning. Over the 3rd and 4th innings the Warriors would answer with five more runs over the Swedes. However, in the 5th inning, the Swedes would score another 6 runs to take the lead. By shutting the opposition out in the next three innings and scoring one more run along the way, the Swedes would come out on top 13-10. Caleb Copeland would lead the Swedes in runs and RBIs with 3 and 5 respectively.
