Baseball Splits With Sterling for Series Win

Sterling, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team concluded their weekend series against Sterling College in a doubleheader on Saturday, resulting in an 8-4 loss and a 4-3 win. The Spires are now 18-28 overall and 12-21 in conference play. 

 

Game One

The Spires scored first against the Warriors in the top of the second inning. While holding the opposing team, the Spires had a rally at the top of the fourth inning, scoring three more runs after a home run by Jack Knutson, scoring Preston Gibson and Trevor Neely. The Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning as they strung together timely hits, chipping away at the Saint Mary lead. After their rally in the top of the third, USM was unable to score any more runs, and the Warriors took the lead, scoring five more runs in the remainder of the game, resulting in an 8-4 loss for Saint Mary.

 

Game Two

The Spires had a slower start in game two, allowing Sterling to build a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. It wasn't until the top of the fourth that USM found a way to tie the game and score two runs when Eli Prine doubled into left-center field, allowing Bryce Turner to score. Kruz Wahwahsuck followed an RBI single to right center field, scoring Prine to tie the game. Sterling fought back the next inning, scoring one more run, but it wasn't enough to hold the Spires. In the top of the sixth inning, Brenden Roop singled up the middle, scoring two decisive runs to secure the 4-3 win.

Saint Mary will travel to play York University for the season finale series starting at 3 p.m. on Friday in York, Nebraska.
