
Spires Surge Past Sterling, 92-80, in Offensive Showcase
LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team secured a thrilling 92-80 victory over Sterling College. In a game that featured seven lead changes and 10 ties, the Spires rode a second-half surge to improve to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in KCAC play.
The Spires found themselves trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, struggling to contain Sterling's offense early. Despite the deficit, Saint Mary clawed back to within two points at halftime, trailing 42-40. After the break, the Spires turned up the intensity, taking a four-point lead by the end of the third quarter and never looking back. Their offense exploded in the fourth, building a lead as large as 13 points to seal the win.
Key Performances
Addison Schletzbaum had a dominant night, leading the Spires with 25 points and recording a double-double by pulling down 10 rebounds. She also added an assist and shot 11-for-18 from the field, including two three-pointers.
Alanis Delgado continued her strong play, contributing 15 points and seven assists while knocking down three triples. Delgado also broke the school record for most all-time assist in Spire history with 319 total. Katelynn Ostronic provided a spark inside, posting 17 points, 11 rebounds, and seven clutch free throws to complete her double-double.
Demi Aamold added 12 points, going 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, while Summer Wieneke chipped in nine points off the bench with three three-pointers.
Team Effort and Shooting Efficiency
Saint Mary shot an impressive 49.3% from the floor and 44.0% from three-point range, knocking down 11 triples. Their efficiency extended to the free-throw line, where they converted 13-of-15 attempts for 86.7%. The Spires also broke a school record with most assists in a single game with 26 total assists.
The Spires dominated the glass, outrebounding Sterling 41-24, including 15 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. Their 26 assists highlighted unselfish ball movement, breaking down Sterling's defense and creating open looks.
