Sterling battles against York, loses 14-6

Sterling College baseball traveled to York, Neb. for a make-up game against York University on Monday, April 21. The Warriors were solid defensively through the first three innings but back-to-back-to-back four-innings from the Panthers put the game out of reach as Sterling lost 14-6.

York scored first with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but Sterling answered quickly with two scores of their won in the bottom of the fifth. Ezavian Campos got things started for the Warriors with a double to right center field to bring home Nehemiah House for the score.

Tyler Gates followed it up with a one-run homer to close the gap and make the score 4-2.

An RBI single from Ryan Romero and a three-run homer from Cameron Reeve extended the Panther's lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

Andrew Dutro answered back with a triple to right field to bring in Emmanuel Huerta Cardenas in the top of the sixth to make it an 8-3 game.

York's Trevor Peterson responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth and the Panthers were able to capitalize on a single through the left side and an error by pitcher Nate Heffline to extend the lead to 12-3.

Sterling did not go away quietly. In the top of the eighth Austin Santiago brought home Dutro and Morales with a triple to right center field and House returned the favor with a single up the middle to get the Warriors within six, 12-6.

However, two more scores in the bottom of the eighth and a fruitless top of the ninth inning would give York the 14-6 win.

Trenton Canaan started things off from the mound for the Warriors. He pitched four innings, facing 24 batters, surrendering eight hits which resulted in seven runs (five earned), while walking three batters and striking out two. Nate Heffline came in as relief where he pitched one and two-third innings, facing 14 batters, surrendering five hits, which resulted in five runs, while walking two batters and striking out three.

Tyreek Sherman came in to close for Sterling. He pitched two and one-third innings where he faced 11 batters, giving up one hit which resulted in two runs while walking two batters and striking out two.

Sterling will take the field again on Friday, April 25 at home as they take on McPherson College.
