St. Martin Scores 19 but Spires Drop to Sterling 69-57

Sterling, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team played against Sterling College, resulting in a 69-57 loss. The Spires are now 5-12 overall and drop to 1-10 in conference play.

Saint Mary started the first half slowly as the Warriors got out to an early 7-0 lead. Joey Schultz got things started for Saint Mary as he hit a jump shot to cut the Sterling lead. As the half continued, the Warriors started to gain momentum. Joe Burgos and Deshaud St. Martin helped keep the Spires in it as they hit big shots to pull within seven points. With a little under four minutes to go in the half, Sterling went on a scoring run that extended their lead to 35-18 heading into halftime.

The Spires did not waste any time coming out of halftime as Schultz and Braylen Duncan made quick consecutive shots. After Sterling answered with a three-pointer, St. Martin and Duncan hit another pair of consecutive shots to bring the Spires within ten points, making the score 38-28. Sterling, however, went on another scoring run to go up 49-31. Blake Chadwick hit a three that looked to swing momentum in favor of Saint Mary as Cam Southern and Luke Mackey both made big shots of their own to bring USM within nine points. After a timeout by the Warriors, Sterling found their footing and closed the game out with free throws, winning 69-57. St. Martin led the way for Saint Mary offensively, scoring 19 points, as Schultz finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
